PEORIA EMERGENCY HOUSING ASSISTANCE PROGRAMThe Peoria Emergency Housing Assistance Program (PEHAP) was established by the Peoria Tribe with non-recurring Native American Housing Assistance and self-determination Act of 1996 funds from the Peoria Housing Authority (PHA).
The purpose of PEHAP is to assist low-income individuals with emergency housing needs that may include, but not be limited to, repairs due to storm, fire, flood damage or other natural disasters. This also includes housing needs that may result in illness, injury, or situations that may be deemed detrimental to health or safety. This program allows the Peoria tribe to assist low-income individuals with emergency assistance not permitted by any program the tribe currently administers. “Non-recurring” funds are funds that are contingent on the PHA year-to-year funding.
PEHAP allows the Peoria Tribe to assist individuals whose tribe is currently under the Peoria Housing Authority umbrella. These individuals will be given priority over individual Indians whose tribe does not participate under the PHA umbrella. All participants must meet the income guidelines for assistance. The income guidelines are 80 percent of the national median income level.
The HIP Director of the Peoria Tribe performs administration for PEHAP. This program requires minimal additional duties. Most of the forms are currently being used in the BIA HIP program.
The Tribe’s current Housing/Social Services Committee serves as the oversight committee for this program. All monies received by the Tribe are invested according to the established policies. Monies received are not obligated each fiscal year, but may be carried forward into the next.
